Serial Idiocy: The Sandman
The Idiots decided to shake things up something fierce and discuss Sandman, both the Netflix series and to a lesser extent the comic.
Spoiler warning: We give our general, spoiler free impressions of the show in the first 39 minutes. After 40 minutes, we go into full on spoiler discussion. We do give a warning with plenty of time to stop the episode though if you want to only listen to the spoiler free portion.
We had been wanting to do an episode of what we dubbed Serial Idiocy for a while now, but it's a serious time investment, both to watch a show and record, and we just couldn't agree on a show that was strong enough to warrant that kind of work load. Enter Sandman (exit light, enter night....), the Netflix adaptation of Neil Gaiman's masterfully written, dark, twisted, and fantastical comic series which ran from 1989 to 1996. Production companies have been courting Gaiman trying to adapt Sandman for decades, and every time he has turned them down because the comic is his baby. It is widely considered to be one of the greatest comics ever written, and often considered one of the greatest things Gaiman has ever written (both of which are very high bars indeed). As an aside, if you want to be disgusted, go see if you can find some of the "adaptation" ideas that were shopped to Gaiman.
This group though? They did something right, they got Gaiman to sign on, and in the years they spent producing the show, Neil has been excited about it, praising the set work, the casting, the writing, everything. It couldn't POSSIBLY live up to the comic, could it? It couldn't be that good, could it?
Yes, yes it could.
I could sing the praises of The Sandman for hours in the show notes, but then you wouldn't have a reason to listen to the episode.
Again, a warning, if you're concerned about spoilers, stop the episode at around 39:30.
